Inspired by reading the Wikipedia article about the Dungeons and Dragons creature, the Beholder. Also by fighting similar creatures in Angband and Nethack - I decided a cybernetic/mechanical form of the creature would be kinda cool. This is one of the Bryce works I'm most proud of - usually I do scenes and simpler objects, so this is a change for me.
Think of it as a talented wizard's attempt to mimic the beholder with steel, magic and ever-staring eyes. Background and Beholder done in Bryce, everything put together in the GIMP. Enjoy!
Wow. That's pretty damn impressive... I love the... everything! The background looks great, and the foreground's bloody well done. The eyes look a little... simple, compared to the rest of the body, but then I'd imagine a mechanical creature to have glass eyes or something, so I guess that works alright. Overall a very nice design; a nice collection of primitives that actually look quite complex as a whole. Why ten eyes stalks, though? Don't beholders normally have eight? I may be mistaken, but I thought they did. Anyway... splendid work... a for sure... I wish I'd thought of the idea myself, though I'm not sure I could have done it this well
Thanks The background was just a very basic fractal landscape taken from above - I just wanted somethign simple. The eyes were meant to be quite simple, it's not meant to be alive and vital, but cool and mechanical. I added the mini blue light sources for just that effect - blue has a cooling effect on images
As for the number of eyes - not entirely sure. I'd have to look it up. I chose ten eye stalks because it looked to be about the right number. If I'd put too many more in, it would have looked very cluttered. And thankyou muchly for the favourite.
It wasn't nearly as difficult as some of my previous work - the secret is to make it modular, and it's much much less effort. I made a single "imb, a single joint, and a single eyestalk. Then I made the body (main part), and just added several copies oriented and joined appropriately.
Glad you liked though and thanks for the fave

I was considering it, but it would have been a great deal of effort... and I think spoiled the effect. It's meant to be cold, mechanical and lifeless. Making the eyes too detailed would take away from the glassy look

Maybe try some photo-real eye textures, or perhaps a bit of organic "goo" and/or wiring where the eyes are in the sockets?
